English Version

When I take out the vacuum cleaner and turn it on, most of the cats just disappear. It is only Fritjof who does not pay any attention and if I want to vacuum where he lays, I better bend my back and move him to another spot first.

The other cats have their special hiding places and ways to hide. It is only a myth that the ostrich hides his head in the sand, but it is not a myth that our cat Fridolina uses the principle "if I can not see you, you can not see me" when hiding.

She climbs to the highest shelf in one of the cats' climbing trees in one corner and flops down flat there with her head facing the corner, as soon as she hears the vacuum cleaner coming. Certainly, she needs the exercise, so it is only fine that she climbs all the way to the top.

However, I am disappointed that none of the cats cheer for me or give me support when I vacuum up all the hair that they have shed during the week. But I guess that this saying really is true: "Dogs have masters, but cats have servants."

Swedish Medical Center i Aurora, Colorado.  Picture from Wikipedia

http://www.swedish.org/About/Overview/Our-History#ixzz21CI1ktUK

 http://www.swedishamerican.org/

English version

I heard on the TV reports from the terrible massacre in the movie theatre in Aurora, CO, that many of the wounded persons had been taken to the nearby located Swedish Medical Center.

It made me reflect over what hospitals and medical centers founded by the Swedish immigrtants here in the US that still carry their original names.

Thus we have the Swedish Medical Center in Aurora, CO. I have not succeeded in finding more about its history than it was founded in 1905 as a tuberculosis sanatorium. 1956 the focus was turned to general health care. For more info see:

http://www.swedishhospital.com/

Then we go to Chicago, IL and there we find Swedish Covenant Hospital. That hospital was founded in 1880 by the Swedish Evangelical Covenant Mission Friends. Over the years, many changes have occurred, but the mission remains the same: Swedish Covenant Hospital is committed to caring for the mind, body and spirit of all patients. For more info see: http://swedishcovenant.org/

In Seattle, WA we have Swedish Medical Center, often only known as "Swedish". In 1908, Dr. Nils Johanson, a surgeon and Swedish immigrant, convinced 10 of his fellow Swedish-Americans to put up $1,000 each in order to open Swedish Hospital. For more info see:

//www.swedish.org/About/Overview/Our-History#ixzz21CI1ktUK

In Rockford, IL we find Swedish American Health Systems. In response to a great need for healthcare services in Rockford, the city's growing Swedish community decided to build a new hospital in 1911.For more info see: http://www.swedishamerican.org/

And finally the two which have disappeared during the years as they have merged och been bought up.

It still says "Swedish Hospital" over the doors to one of the older buildings that now is part of the large Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. For more info see:http://www.hcmc.org/medcenter/timeline.htm

And then finally the five buildings at the corner of Rogers Avenue and Sterling Place in Brooklyn, NY, formerly occupied by the Swedish Hospital, which now have been sold to the Odessa Home for the Aged

For sure there is more proof of the Swedish immigrants initiatives, but this will do for now.

English Version

Are you allowed to take vacation from being a retiree?

I have soon been retired for two years and my life has setteled into new routines with work around the house, shopping trips to the grocery store, cat service, dog exercise, blogging, and letter writing.

I wonder if I should give myself a few weeks of vacation from all these routines now in the heat of summer. Yes, it is so hot here just now, old heat records are broken almost every day, that I do not have strength to do anything. You have surely noticed that my blog is suffering because of my lack of energy in the heat.

So why not take the full consequences of the lack of strength and enthusiasm and take some vacation? What would I then do on my vacation? I would read one or two books, drink coffee and eat chocolate covered old fashioned donuts.

Wonder only to whom I should submit my application for vacation, and if it would be approved?

English Version

This morning when Chris stepped out on the porch, she was met by one of our neighbors who was sampling the wild strawberries. She was contemplating the rose bushes behind the fence as dessert.

I have built sturdy fences around the flower beds and even tomato plants that we wanted to protect from being eaten by the deer. However, we have not succeeded especially well to save the plants. - The lilies are eaten, the hostas are eaten, the tomato plants are nibbled on, the wild roses are eaten and so on.

The deer jump my fences and they poke their heads through the fences wherever there happens to be gap large enough. And then I have also seen rabbits around here and believe that they enjoy our flowers in their own way.

If we live here next year and want some nice flowers around here I probably have to build a high and tight fence around our flower beds. But I'll start worrying about that when that time comes.

English Version

I use an old picture of me in AZ to illustrate how I feel this week. It has been unbearable hot, several new heat records have been registered during the week. As it is not enough with the heat alone. The humidity has been extremely high. Some days the weathermen and -women have described the climate as tropical. The so called "heat index", thus how hot the body thinks it is with heat and humidity weighed together, has been around 110F, and that is little too much for a cold blooded Swede like me.

But hopefully it is over for this time. The high temperature for the nearest days is predicted to be "only" 85 F and there will even be one or two rain showers. But with knowledge of how unpredictable the weather is here, it will probably be thunderstorms with hail and a sporadic tornado to boot.

You can never be really satisfied.

English below the Swedish,

Att ha sina ankor i en rad (To have one's ducks in a row) är mycket viktigt här i USA.

English Version

To have one's ducks in a row is very important here in the US. It stands for being organized and have your affairs in order. A scatterbrained person does for sure not have their ducks in a row.

The urban people of today, who often use these expressions, do not think of the living ducks at the farm or in the pond, but more often they think of the so called "Rubber Ducks"

The Rubber Ducks are not only favorite toys for bathing children, no they have wiggled themselves in everywhere. While I was working there were even middle aged persons at the office that were collecting these ducks, who come in a lot of different shapes and personalities.

Among those Rubber Ducks who swam up to my desk, you can see some of them above, my favorites were a train conductor and a kitty duck, (see separate photo). In the picture of the long row of ducks the second one is a bike rider ((Harley Davidson?) and in light blue, number four from the back, is Statue of Liberty.

And as you can see in the top picture, I really have my ducks in a row!

English version

The fourth of July is a federal holiday in the US. This year I can celebrate the day for the third time as a US Citizen. I do not know if it feels anything different from when I celebrated the day as a tourist before we moved to the US, or as an Resident Alien before I became a citizen. Neither are we going to celebrate the day by anything other than raising the flag, having old fashioned chocolate covered donuts with the morning coffee and chocolate ice cream with chocolate syrup with the afternoon coffee and listen to some patriotic music on the CD player. We don't do fireworks and parades.

The photo show Chris and me as the legendary Swedish immigrant couple to the US, Kristina and Karl Oskar Nilsson (the main characters in the emigrant- immigrant epos by the Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg). The picture was taken at the first log house we built here in Swedish America. I have built the stone wall behind us and the wooden fence at our side all by my self (bragging).

Fourth of July, official Independence Day is commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in the year of 1776. The Declaration of Independence declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain

There is also another reason to celebrate July 4th. It just happens to be the birthday of our eldest cat, Fritjof. We will give him extra portions of his favorite treat, Whisker Lickins and of course sing Happy Birthday to him.

Thus if you hear any singing, fireworks or see a parade or two and other festivities on Wednesday July 4th, it can either be to celebrate the Independence Day or Fritjofs birthday, or both.
