Läsa bok eller se film, ja se det är frågan.

Filmer är ofta baserade på böcker. Men lika ofta är det stora skillnader i personerna och handlingen i boken och filmversionen.

För inte så länge sedan läste jag John Grishams bok "The Pelican Brief" och eftersom vi har DVD'n som är baserad på den boken så tittade jag på den direkt efter att jag läst ut boken. Det var verkligen stora skillnader mellan boken och DVD versionen.

En av huvudpersonerna som uttryckligen är vit boken spelas av en svart skådespelare i filmversionen. Vilket ger en fel vinkling åt filmen, även om skådespelaren är en av mina favoriter, Denzel Washington. Det är vidare svårt att identifiera personer i filmen. De får mycket bättre introduktioner i boken.

Många viktiga händelser saknas dessutom i filmversionen. Boken är i mitt tycke mera fängslande och ger fler dimensioner åt händelseförloppet än filmen. Filmen är visserligen mer drastisk med två bilbombsexplosioner, men boken är mer spännande. En nyckelperson, Mattiece, i vars hus, ett av dem, ett mord begås, beskrivs ingående i boken, men visas inte i filmen. Man hänvisar endast till honom i filmen. Mordet tas inte alls upp i fimen.

Mitt råd är sedan lång tid tillbaka: "Läs den litteratur en film är baserad på innan du går och ser filmen."

Read the book or see the movie, that's the question.

Movies are not seldom based on books. But frequently there are substantial differences in the characters and the plot between the book and the movie.

Not long ago I read "The Pelican Brief" by John Grisham and as we have the DVD movie that is based on that book, I watched the movie right after I read the book. There really were very noticeable differences between the book version and the movie version.

One of the main characters who clearly is white in the book is played by a black actor in the movie version. It gives a wrong angle to the movie, even if the actor is one of my favorites, Denzel Washington. It is also difficult to identify the different characters in the movie. They are introduced in a much better way and depth in the book.

Furthermore many important happenings are left out in the movie version. The book is in my opinion more captivating and gives more dimension to the intrigue than the movie version. The movie has certainly more action with two car bomb explosions, but there is more suspense in the book. One key character, Mattiece, in whose house, one of them, a murder is committed, is described in detail in the book, but is not pictured at all in the movie. There is only a reference to him in the movie. The murder is not even mentioned in the movie version.

My advice, which I have been giving for many years, is: "Read the literary work a movie is based on, before you see the movie."

Året om har vi ett fågelbad ute vid våra fågelmatare. På vintern sätter vi i en elektrisk doppvärmare så att vattnet inte fryser. Då sätter vi även ett galler runt fågelbadet så rådjuren inte kommer åt det. De dricker nämligen snabbt upp allt vatten och knuffar även omkull det ibland. Den elektriska doppvärmaren skadas om den ligger fritt, utan att omges av vatten, en längre tid. Allehanda fåglar och smådjur som ekorrar och jordekorrar utnyttjar fågelbadet flitigt året om.

I veckan som gått har det varit mellan -20C och -25C på dagarna och kallare än det på nätterna, men doppvärmaren har bestått provet och hållit fågelbadet öppet hela tiden..

Year round we have a bird bath by our bird feeders outside. During winter we put in an electric water heater so the water does not freeze. Then we also put up a fence around the bird bath so the deer can not reach it. Otherwise they quickly drink all the water and sometimes they even knock it over. The electric water heater is damaged if it is not covered with water while plugged in. A variety of birds and small critters like squirrels and chipmunks use the bird bath intensely year around.

During this week it has been between -5F to -15F during the days and even colder during nights, but the electric water heater has met the challenges and kept the water in the bird bath open constantly.

Vårt hus har gavlarna mot öster och väster. Alltså vätter taket mot söder och norr. Taket är mycket brant, vilket är bra, för då behöver jag inte klättra upp på det och skotta snön av det. Takets branta vinkel betyder även att solen, trots att den står ganska lågt på himlen så här års, värmer intensivt på taket. Alltså även om det råkar vara ganska många minusgrader, så smälter snön på taket. Smältvattnet kyls snabbt av på vägen ner mot marken och bildar iskonstverk i de torra kvistar som finns kvar av sommarens växtlighet.

Our house has the gables in east and west. Thus the roof faces south and north. The roof is very steep, which is good, as I do not need to climb up on it to clean the snow off the roof. The steep angle also means that the sun, even though the sun is very low in the sky this time of the year, heats the roof. Thus even if it is far below freezing, the snow melts on the roof. The water is quickly chilled on its way down to the ground and forms ice art in the dry branches left from the summer.

Alla vet naturligtvis att det är skillnad mellan hundar och katter. Först lägger man märke till skillnaden i utseendet. Sen ser man skillnaden i beteenden. Hundarna är mera beroende av människan för motion och för att få gå ut och uträtta sina behov. Katterna sköter sin egen motion och går till sina sandlådor när de så känner för det. Och så slutligen har vi den mentala skillnaden. Alltså hur hundar och katter uppfattar sin ställning här i samhället. Det sägs att hundar har herrar men katter har betjänter. Det senare illustrerat i fotot Chris tog av min arm när jag var på väg att servera kvällsmat till en en av våra katter.

Everybody know of course that there is a difference between dogs and cats. First you see it in the appearance. Then you see it in the behavior. Dogs are more dependent on humans to get exercise and to go out to do their business. Cats take care of their own exercise and visit their litter boxes when the feel for it. Finally we have the mental difference. Thus how dogs and cats view their standing in society. It is said that dogs have masters, but cats have servants. The latter illustrated in the photo Chris took of my arm when I was on my way to serve the evening meal to one of our cats

När är julen över egentligen? Här har de flesta sina

juldekorationer uppe till över nyår, men inte längre. De svenska

traditioner jag minns var att julen tog slut antingen på Trettondan, eller allra senast på Tjugondag Knut. I en populär julsång heter det ju dessutom även att julen varar än till påska.

Vad som, nu är det dock bara lite över elva månader kvar till jul.

When is Christmas over actually? Most people here keep their Christmas decorations up until New Year, but not longer. The Swedish traditions I remember was that Christmas ended either on Epiphany or at the latest on "Tjugondag Knut" ( Jan 13). However, a popular Swedish Christmas song says that Christmas lasts all the way up to Easter.

Whatever, it is just little over eleven months left until Christmas.

Som de flesta av er vet är vi vegetarianer. Jag har hört många icke vegetarianer säga att det måste vara trist, smaklöst och enformigt att bara äta vegetarisk mat. Men se då har de fel. Det finns massor att välja mellan, allt ifrån ravioli till mexikansk gryta och köttfärslimpa däremellan.

I går kväll hade vi till exempel organsikt odlad ungsbakad potatis, organiskt odlade grönsaker och så en grönsaksbiff samansatt av soja och råris som huvudingredienser. Det hela piggades upp med tranbärssylt och en smörklick i potatisarna. Till det drack vi kolsyrat mineralvatten. Inte dumt alls!

Chris är rätt bra på att fixa till vegetariska rätter. Får se vad hon kokar ihop till i kväll.

As most of you know we are vegetarians. I have heard that many non vegetarians says it must be boring, tasteless and the same thing over and over to just eat vegetarian food. But then they are wrong. There are lots of different meals to choose between, all from ravioli to Mexican casserole and meatloaf in between.

Last night for example, we had organic baked potatoes, organic vegetables, and then a beef patty with soy and brown rice as main ingredientes. The meal was given a touch by adding cranberry and some butter. We drank carbonized mineral water. Not bad at all!

Chris is good at fixing vegetarian meals. Lets see what she cooks up tonight.
