Häromdagen passerade Francine och jag en brandstation. Dalmatiner är ju förknippade med brandbilar och Francine ville stanna och titta på brandbilarna på stationen.

Av någon anledning var de sex garagedörrarna öppna och det stod ett tiotal brandbilar och en ambulans där inne. Vi såg inte till en enda människa, men någon fanns säkert därinne någonstans.

Brandstationen var en som bemannades av frivilliga brandmän, som var hemma eller på sina arbetsplatser när inget hände. Systemet med frivilligt bemannade brandstationer är mycket vanligt här i USA. När larmet går lämnar de frivilliga brandmännen sina hem och arbetsplatser, kastar sig i sina bilar och kör till brandstationen där de snabbt drar på sina skyddskläder, stövlar och hjälmar, hoppar in i brandbilarna och far iväg med tjutande sirener och blinkande ljus till brand- eller katastrofplatsen.

I staten Wisconsin, där vi bodde förut, får de frivilliga brandmännen ha sirener och varningsljus monterade på sina privata bilar så de kan ta sig snabbare fram till brandstationen. Här i Minnesota måste de frivilliga brandmännen ta sig till brandstationen som vilken annan privatperson som hellst och följa alla trafikregler. Det gäller alltså att brandmännen bor eller arbetar nära brandstationen.

I alla fall så godkände Francine brandbilarna. De var nytvättade och blanka och såg ut att vara i gott skick.

The other day Francine and I passed a fire station. Dalmatians are associated with fire trucks and Francine wanted to stop and take a peek at the fire trucks in the fire station.

For some reason the six garage doors were open and we could see about ten fire trucks and one ambulance in the station. We did not see a single person, but somebody was probably in there somewhere.

The fire station was one of those manned by volunteers, who were at home or at work when nothing happened. The system with volunteer fire brigades is very common here in the US. When there is an alarm the volunteers haste from their homes and work places, jump in their cars and drive to the fire station, where they don their protective gears, boots and helmets, get in to the fire trucks and rush away with sirens and flashing lights to the fire or accident.

In the state of Wisconsin, where we lived earlier, the volunteer fire fighters are allowed to have sirens and flashing lights on their private cars so they more easily and faster can get to the fire station. Here in Minnesota they have to drive like any other motorist and follow all traffic rules. Thus the volunteers have to live ond work close to the fire station.

Anyhow, Francine approved of the fire trucks. They were washed, shiny and looked to be in good shape.

Som jag nämnt tidigare så har vi balkong nu. Vi har kostat på oss att ha några blomlådor på den balkongen. Det har vi inte ångrat. Blommorna artar sig bra och är en mycket fin färgklick och en fröjd för ögat att njuta av.

Balkongen har sol några timmar varje morron och kväll. Det tycks vara idealiskt för de blomsorter vi valt. De blommor vi har är Flitiga Lisa, Sommarrudbeckia och Tagetis.

Det skall bli intressant att se hur långt in på hösten de kommer att hålla sig fina och blomma.

English Version

As I have mentioned earlier, we now have a balcony. We have afforded ourselves some flowerboxes on that balcony. An investment we have not regretted. The flowers are growing well, are colorful and a joy to look at.

The sun reaches the balcony a few hours morning and evening. It seems to be a good situation for the kind of flowers we have chosen. The plants we have are Impatiens, Black Eyed Susan, and Marigold.

It will be interesting to see how late into Fall the flowers will live and bloom.

Min dator är så långsam nu att det känns som om jag levde i stenåldern och satt och hackade in ett skrivtecken i taget i en stenhäll i stället för att låta fingrarna flyga fram över tangenterna och med blixtens hastighet skapa ord och meningar.

Francine hittade inga skrivna meddelanden på den sten hon inspekterar på fotot, men väl några intressanta lukter. Ett sätt hundar kommunicerar på är att de skvättar sina "visitkort" på lämpliga ställen så andra hundar kan lukta sig till vem som varit där tidigare.

Det är jobbigt och inget inspirerande alls att skriva på en slö dator. Man tappar tråden och retar bara upp sig. Jag måste nog ta mig i kragen och ta datorn till någon som kan fixa den igen. Förmodligen tar jag den till en avdelning i varuhuskedjan Best Buy som heter Geek Squad. Dit har jag tagit krånglande och trilskande datorer förr och oftast har de kunnat hjälpa mig.

Egentligen borde jag väl kasta den här datorn på soptippen och köpa en ny. Den är nämligen en fyra - fem år gammal och i dagens elektroniska samhälle är den lika gammal som stenen Francine lutar sig mot. Förresten får jag inte kasta den på soptippen. Elektroniska prylar måste lämnas in till speciella återvinningsställen.

Just firman Best Buy tar emot elektroniska prylar utan kostnad, så vi får se om jag låter dem fixa den eller låter dem behålla den för gott. Det beror mycket på vad en ny liten notebook kostar. Ja, den som lever får se vad som händer.

My computer is so slow now that I feel I live in the stone age

and am sitting chiseling in one letter at a time into a stone in stead of letting my fingers fly over the keyboard and with the speed of a lightening bolt create word and sentences.

Francine did not find any written messages on the stone she inspects in the photo, but instead she found some interesting smells. One way dogs communicate is when they squirt their "business card" in selected places so other dogs can smell who has been there earlier.

It is cumbersome and not inspiring at all to write on a slow computer. You loose your thoughts and only get irritated. I have to get around to take the computer to somebody who can fix it. I will probably take it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy. I have taken broken down computers to them before and most of the time they have been able to help me.

I probably should just throw this computer in the trash and buy a new one. This one is four - five years old and in today's electronic society that is as old as the stone Francine is leaning on. However, I can not just throw the computer in the trash bin. Electronic items have to be handed in to special recycling places.

Best Buy is just one of these places that accepts electronic items for recycling free of charge. I do not know if I will let them fix my computer or let them just keep it. It depends on how much a new note book computer will cost. Stay tuned.
