Jag har en ny almanacka för 2011 med bilder av olika gamla propellerflygplan. På upplägget för januari finns det foton av två flygplan tillverkade av det Brittiska företaget de Haviland.

Nere i högra hörnet är ett foto av och lite text om DH 82 Tiger Moth. Ett av mina favoritflygplan. Fotot av Mothen överst i den här bloggen har jag tagit på flygfältet i Örebro i början av 60-talet. Mothen tillhörde Örebro Flygklubb och användes till att bogsera upp segelflygplan med. Den hade ett härligt motorljud när den kom neddykande för att släppa av bogserlinan och sedan göra en brant stigning i kurva igen.

Den stora bilden i januari är av en DH 89 Dragon Rapide. Det är första gången jag ser och hör talas om det planet, men jag föll för det genast jag såg det. På något sätt tilltalar konstruktionen mig. Inte minst den inglasade förarkabinen såg mysig ut. Jag skulle gärna vilja sitta där och flyga det planet. Problemen med det är dock att jag inte har tillgång till planet och dessutom, en bagatell, inte har någon pilotutbildning. Under alla omständigheter så njuter jag i alla fall av att titta på bilden. Bara nu inte januari månad går för fort.

I have a new calendar for 2011 with ictures of different propeller aircrafts. On the January spread there are photoes of two different airplanes built by the Brittish company de Haviland.

Down in the right hand corner there is a photo of and some text about DH 82 Tiger Moth. One of my favorite aircrafts. The photo of the Moth on top of this blog, I have taken at the airport in my hometown Örebro in the beginning of the 60-ies. The Moth belonged to Örebro Aero Club and was mainly used to pull up gliders. It had a wonderful engine sound when it came down in a steep dive to let go of cable it had had the glider hooked to, and then make a steep acent in a curve again.

The main picture in January is of a DH 89 Dragon Rapide. It is the first time I and hear about that plane, but it was love at first sight. The construction appeals to me. I specially like the cock pit with its big window panes. I would like to sit there and pilote that plane. The only problems are that I don not have access to such an airplane, and, a minor issue, I do not have any pilot training. Anyhow, I enjoy looking at the pictures. I only wish that January is not rushing by too fast.

För några dagar sedan, när det var lite varmare, besökte en opossum området under våra fågelmatare. Förmodligen åt den solrosfrö som fallit ner från matarna. Den var ganska stor. Faktiskt större än vår största katt.

 Det är inte så ofta vi ser opossums. De är vanligtvis nattdjur. De tillhör pungdjuren, liksom kängurun bland andra. Honorna bär nämligen med sig sin avkomma i en pung tills de blivit stora nog att klara sig på egen hand. De använder den nakna svansen till att hänga i trädgrenar med. En annan egenskap den har är att den spelar död när den blir hotad. Därav uttrycket "playing 'possum".

 Fotot ovan är taget genom vårt skitiga köksfönster, som dessutom är försett med myggnät. Ja, jag har lovat Chris att meddela att det är jag som är ansvarig för fönstertvätten här i huset. Under alla omständigheter så kan man i alla fall se att det är en opossum som går därute.

Some days ago, when the weather was little warmer, an opossum visited the area under our bird feeders. It most likely was eating the sunflower seed that had fallen on the ground from the feeders. It was fairly big. Actually bigger than our biggest cat.

It is not that often we see opossums. Normally they are nocturnal animals. They belong to the pouch animals, which even the kangaroo does. The females have a pouch in which they carry the young until they are big enough to survive on their own. They use the naked tail for hanging from tree branches. Another trick the opossum has is to play dead when it is threatened. Hence the expression "playing 'possum".

 The picture above is taken through our dirty kitchen window, which in addition is covered by mosquito netting. Yes, I have promised Chris to tell that it is me that is responsible for the window washing in our house. Under all circumstances you at least can see that it is an opossum that walks outside the window.
