English Version
A sure sign that the Spring is here is that our friends the vultures have returned. It is a flock of between 20 and 30 Turkey Vultures that have their nests somewhere in our neighborhood every summer. Clever enough they spend the winters in the southern most parts of the US, Central America and South America.
The Turkey Vulture is a large bird with a wingspan of up to about 70 inches, a length of up to about 30 inches and a weight of up to 5 lbs. Its life expectancy in the wild can be up to 16 years.
In 1758, Carolus Linnaeus gave the turkey vulture its Latin name, Cathartes Aura.
The Turkey Vulture is often resting in a spread-winged stance, as in the picture above which I snapped from our porch. The stance is believed to serve the purpose of drying the wings or warming the body. It is practiced most often following rain, which is the situation when I took the picture.
The Turkey Vulture feeds primarily on carrion, but can in exceptional cases feed on vegetation. The Turkey Vulture does not kill live animals to get food. It spends a lot of time soaring low, because it finds its food through its unique ability to smell the rotting dead animal bodies.
We are happy to have these sanitation workers around our house and look forward every spring to their arrival.
