Jackson Street Roundhuse  

När min fru, Chris, dog på våren 2016, blev jag väldigt deprimerad och ensam. Vi hade ju inga barn eller syskon eller ens släktingar i närheten.  Min läkare sade att om jag skulle överleva måste jag kasta mig ut i livet igen, bli voluntär någonstans. Som gammal järnvägare letade jag runt för att se vad det fanns inom det området. Och jag fann Minnesota Transportation Museum med primäraktivitis vid  Jackson Street Roundhouse. Jag besökte museet och efter  att ha talat med två av de drivande krafterna, Jack och Barb Sheldon, började jag mitt nya liv som Docent vid museet. Jack Sheldon IV blev en mycket god vän och till och med adopterade mig som sin broder.

When my wife, Chris, died in the spring of 2016, I became very depressed and lonesome. We had no children or siblings or even relatives in the vicinity. My doctor said that if I were to survive, I had to throw myself out in the life again, volunteer somewhere. As an old railwayman, I looked around to see what was available  in that area. And I found the Minnesota Transportation Museum with primary activitis at the Jackson Street Roundhouse. I visited the museum and after talking with two of the driving forces, Jack and Barb Sheldon, I began my new life as a docent at the museum. Jack Sheldon IV remained very good friend and even adopted me as his brother.

Jag hade många funktioner vid museet. På lördagarna körde vi ett tåg med diesellok och en caboose för besökarna. Tågresan ingick i entrepriset och var mycket uppskattad, inte bara av barnen. Ibland vikarierade jag som stationsmästare och min uppgift var då att göra högtalarutropen och sedan se till att alla var ombord innan jag kunde ge tågmästaren "Klart för avgång". Funktionen som stationsmästare var den funktion jag gillade mest.

I had many functions at the museum. On Saturdays we operated a train with diesel locomotive and a caboose for the visitors. The train journey was included in the enterance ticket  and was much appreciated, not just by the children. Sometimes I was standing in as stationmaster and my task then was to make the speaker calls and then make sure everyone was on board the caboose before I could give the train conductor "Ready for departure". The station master function was the function I liked most.

 
För det mesta var jag dock guide och tog grupper genom museet. Jag var lite handikappad, eftersom min bakgrund var det svenska järnvägssystemet, vilket är lite annorlunda än det amerikanska, även om spårvidden är den samma. Det var dock intressant att träffa alla våra besökare från när och fjärran. Ibland hände det till och med att svenskar kom på besök.

For the most part, though, I was a guide and took groups through the museum. I was a bit handicapped, because my background was the Swedish rail system, which is a little different from the American, although the track width is the same. However, it was interesting to meet all our visitors from near and far. Sometimes it even happened that Swedes came to visit.

 
Vi hade en fungerande smedja i maskinverstaden och kunde tillverka delar till museiföremålen, som inte längre gick att köpa på marknaden. Smedjan var även ett populärt och lärorikt besöksmål.

We had a working black smith shop in the machine shop and were able to manufacture parts for the museum objects, which were no longer available for purchase on the market. The smithy was also a popular and educational destination for our visitors..

 
De flesa av oss var gamla gubbar med eller utan skägg. Kamratskapet var stabilt och vi hade mycket trevligt tillsammans. Ledsamt nog har både Dan (längst fram till vänster) och Jack (längst fram till höger) lämnat jordelivet nu. Jeff (längst bak till vänser) var mycket instumentell när det gällde skapandet av den stora modelljärnvägen i skala G i museet.

Most of us volunteers were old guys with or without beards. The friendship was stable and we had a great time together. Sadly, both Dan (front left) and Jack (front right) have left the eartly life now. Jeff (at the back to the left) was very instrumental when it came to the creation of the large model railway in scale G in the museum.

 
Nu är museet stängt på grund av Corona viruset  och ingen vet när det kommer att öppna för allmänheten igen. Jag blir äldre för var dag och har fått nya prioriteringar i livet. Ibland funderar jag om jag har sett min sista caboose lämna stationen. Under alla omständigheter har jag mycket att tacka Minnesota Transport Museum för.

Now the museum is closed because of the Corona virus and no one knows when it will open to the public again. I grow older every day and now have new priorities in life. Sometimes I wonder if I've seen my last caboose leave the station. In any case, I have a lot to thank the Minnesota Transportation Museum for.
