I söndags morse (söndag naturligtvis!) vaknade vi upp utan vatten i huset. Panik! Man vet inte hur beroende man är av vatten förrän man inte har det längre. Inte bara för att tvätta händerna i, men allt möjligt annat, inte minst att spola toaletterna.

Vi härdade ut tills klockan blivit åtta. Då ringde jag den firma som hade installerat vårt vattensystem och lämnade ett meddelande på deras journummer. En timme senare ringde de tillbaka och efter lite resonemang om problemet och vad det möjligen skulle kosta att fixa det en söndagsmorron så kom Chris och jag fram till att vi i stort sett inte hade något val, och en halvtimme senare rullade bilen på bilderna ovan in på vår garageuppfart.

Efter en del sökande och mätande kom vattumannen fram till att det förmodligen var två fel. Det elektriska reläet som slog till och från pumpen hade blivit utbränt på grund av de ständig av och till slagen. Detta berodde i sin tur på en vattenläcka någonstans.

 Efter en del tester kom vattumannen fram till att det förmodligen var rören i själva brunnen som läckte. Vår brunn är ungefär 75 meter djup och det var bara att sätta upp "borrtornet" bak på bilen och börja hiva upp rör efter rör. Mycket riktigt så var det hål på två av rören i gängorna. Själva rören är galvaniserade, men det är bara det att man gängar dem efter galvaniseringen och då försvinner galvaniseringen i gängorna och de blir utsatta för korrision och rostangrep som så småningom fräter hål.

Efter cirka tre timmars jobb hade rören och det elektriska reläet blivit utbytta, och vattummanen tog ner sitt "borrtorn" och packade ihop bilen och for iväg med beskedet om att en räkning på cirka ettusen dollar kommer som ett brev på posten. Jag kollade med vårt försäkringsbolag, men de sade att eftersom det inta var någon direkt olycka eller annan händelse som förorsakat problem, utan bara vanligt "wear and tear" (nötning vid normal användning) som var orsaken så täcktes inte kostnaden av husförsäkringen.

En dyrbar söndagsmorgon, men nu har vi vatten igen, och är mycket glada och tacksamma för det.

Last Sunday morning (Sunday of course!) we woke up with no water in the house. Panic! You do not know how dependent you are on water until you do not have it any longer. Not only to wash your hands with, but for all kind of things, not least to flush the toilets.

At eight in the morning we could not stand it any longer. I called the firm that had installed our water system and left a message on their answering machine. An hour later they called back and after some discussion about our problem and how much it would cost to fix it on a Sunday morning, Chris and I decided that we had no other choice, and half an hour later the truck in the pictures above rolled into our driveway.

After some investigation and some measuring the water man found out that it probably was two problems. The electric breaker which switched the pump on and off had burnt out due to the continuous switching on and off. This frequent switching was due to a water leak somewhere.

After some more testing the water man decided that it probably was the pipes in the well that were leaking. Our well is about 250 feet deep and the only thing to do was to erect the tower crane on the truck and start to hoist up pipe after pipe. Yes, the water man had been correct. There were holes in the treads in two of the pipes. The pipes are galvanized but the problem is that the treads are made after the pipes are galvanized and then that part is not protected any longer and they are prone to corrosion and rust which finally creates holes in the pipes.

After about three hours work the pipes and the electric breaker had been changed and the water man took down his hoist and packed the truck and left with the message that an invoice of about one thousand dollars would arrive in the mail. I checked with our insurance company, but they said that as this problem was not caused by an accident or other outside source, but just ordinary wear and tear, the costs were not covered by the insurance.

An expensive Sunday morning, but now we have water again, and for that we are grateful.
