Glimpses from my city, Minneapolis, MN

På väg in till centrum under icke rusningstid. Den grå skyskrapan med mörkare överdel heter IDS Tower och är den högsta byggnaden i Minneapolis. Den är 241 meter hög. Huset till vänster, som är byggt i två segment, ett ljust och så ett mörkare bakom, är delar av Targets huvudkontor. Jag arbetade i det huset under några år och ett par av de foton som följer är tagna genom fönster i den byggnaden. -

Approaching downtown during non rush hour traffic. The grey skyscraper with the darker top floors is IDS Tower and that is the tallest building in Minneapolis. It is 792 feet tall. The building to the left, which is built in two segments, one light and then a darker behind, is part of the Target Headquarters. I worked in that building during a few years and some of the following pictures are taken through windows in that building.

Det här fotot tog jag för att illustrera stadens "Skyway" System. Det består av slutna broar, som den på bilden, och sedan prommenadvägar inne i husen. Allt i nivå med andra våningen i byggnaderna. Systemet är 11 kilometer långt och knyter ihop sextionio kvarter i staden. Det är sagt att man kan leva hela sitt liv i Skyways eftersom det knyter ihop allt man behöver, banker, läkarmottagningar, restauranger hyreshus, alla slags affärer, hotell och så vidare. Mycket bra system i sommarhetta, regnväder, snöslask och vinterkyla. -

I took this pictureto illustrate the city's Skyway System. It consists by covered bridges, as in the picture, and then walkways through the buildings. All is located on the second floor level. The system is 7 miles and ties together sixty-nine city blocks. It is said that you can live your whole life in the Skyway System as it connects everything you need, banks, doctors offices, restaurants, rental properties, all kinds of shops, hotels, and so on. Very good system during summer heat, rainstorms, sleet, and cold winter weather.

Som så ofta händer i stora städer så råkade en brandbil under utryckning komma med på fotot. Kvinnan i de högklackade skorna hade bråttom och efter visst övervägande tog hon några steg för att hinna över gatan före brandbilen, men besinnade sig sedan och backade upp på trottoaren igen. I övrigt tycks folket på gatan helt ignorera en blinkande och tjutande brandbil. Storstadsmentalitet? -

As so often happens in big cities a fire truck with flashing lights and sounding sirens happened to be in the photo. The woman in the high heeled shoes was in a hurry and after a seconds hesitation took some steps to cross the street ahead of the fire truck, but came to her senses and backed up on the sidewalk again. Otherwise nobody seemed to pay any attention to a fire truck with flashing lights and sounding sirens. Big city mentality?

 Här ser man en annan av dessa Skyway broar. Huset med det rundade hörnet och höga glasfönstren inrymmer ett av Targets varuhus. De två huskropparna längst till vänster, en mörk och en ljus, är delar av Targets huvudkontor, där jag alltså tillbringade några år. -

Here you see another of these Skyway bridges. The building with the round corner and tall windows houses one of the Target stores. The two buildings all the way to the left, one dark and one light, are parts of the Target Headquarters, where I spent some years.

Så här såg förresten min arbetsplats ut. Fönstren vetter mot söder, där stan inte har några höghus att tala om. -

This is by the way, what my work station looked like. The windows faces south, where there are no tall skyscrapers to speak of.

Det här fotot är taget från mitt kontorshus mot öster. Synålen som sticker upp mitt i bilden är Foshay Tower. När "skyskrapan" invigdes år 1929 var den den högsta byggnaden i Minneapolis med sina 136 meter. Som förebild till arkitekturen hade man haft the Washington Monument. Byggnaden är nu klassad som historisk och finns med i National Register of Historic Places. -

This picture is taken from my office building facing east. The "needle" standing in the middle of the picture is Foshay Tower. When the "Skyscraper" was inaugurated in the year 1929 it was the tallest building in Minneapolis with a height of 447 feet. It was modeled after the Washington Monument. The building is now classified as historic and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Det här fotot är även det taget från mitt kontorshus i riktning norrut. Det är taget genom ett fönster på våningen där jag jobbade. Alltså högre upp det förra fotot. Den stora vita byggnade i fotots mitt är Target Center, en arena med 20500 åskådarplatser. Den är hemmaplan för basketbollslagen Minnesota Timberwolves (män, NBA) och Minnesota Lynx (kvinnor, WNBA). Mitt i bildens övre del kan man skymta Mississippifloden som kommer flytande norrifrån. -

Even this picture is taken from my office building, facing north. It is taken through a window on the floor I worked on. Thus higher up than the previous photo. The large white building in the middle part of the photo is the Target Center, an arena with a capacity of 20,500 people. It is home to the basketball teams Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA, men's team) and the Minnesota Lynx (WNBA women's team). In the middle of the upper part of the picture you can see a glimpse of the Mississippi River flowing down from the north.

På det här fotot taget österut från 3rd Avenue Bridge kan man se en av de många slussarna i Mississippifloden till höger. Det är en ganska intensiv pråmtrafik på floden. Till exempel så transporteras 60% av landets all sädesexport via pråm nerför Mississippi till Mexikanska Golfen. -

In this picture, taken eastward from the 3rd Avenue Bridge, you can see one of the many locks and dams in the Mississippi River to the right. The barge traffic is rather intense on the river. As an example 60% of all US grain export is transported by barge on the Mississippi down to the Gulf of Mexico.

Mississippifloden är huvudfloden i det mest omfattande flodsystemet i Nordamerika. Floden flyter från norr till söder igenom hela kontinenten och är 4070 kilometer lång. -

The Mississippi River is the main river in the largest river system in North America. The river flows from north to south through the whole continent and is 2,530 miles long.

Den otämjda delen av floden till vänster rusar över ett vattenfall som heter St Anthony Falls. -

The untamed part of the river to the left rushes over a waterfall named St Anthony Falls.

Till vänster om floden kan man se en stor kvarnanläggning, the Pillbury Mill. Kvarnen togs i bruk år 1881. Själva kvarnanläggningen drevs av två av de största direkt drivna vattenhjul som någonsin byggts. De genererade 1200 hästkrafter var, och under 40 år var det världens största sädeskvarn. Kvarnens verksamhet upphörde så sent som år 2003. -

To the left of the river you can see a large flour mill, the Pillsbury Mill. The mill was completed in 1881. It operated two of the most powerful direct-drive water wheels, each generating 1,200 horse power, and during 40 years the mill was the largest flour mill in the world. The mill ceased operation as late as 2003.

Även om Mississippifloden sammanbinder städerna Minneapolis och St Paul, så är den opraktisk som tansportled. Nej, nu håller man som bäst på med att bygga ut det spårvägssystem (Light Rail System) som finns i Minneapolis med en linje till St Paul. Den nya linjen blir 18 kilometer lång och går från stadskärna till stadskärna. Linjen beräknas bli färdig år 2014. -

Even if the Mississippi River connects Minneapolis and St Paul, it is not practical for communication. No, now construction is in full swing on expanding the Light Rail System that already exists in Minneapolis with a line to St Paul. This new line will cover 11 miles and run from downtown to downtown. The line is expected to be completed by 2014.
