Jag hörde på TV rapporteringen från den hemska massakern i biografen i Aurora, Colorado att många av de skottskadade offren hade förts till det närbelägna Swedish Medical Center.

Det fick mig att reflektera över vilka sjukhus och sjukvårdinrättningar som de svenska immigranterna grundade här i USA som fortfarande finns kvar under sina ursprungliga namn.

Vi har alltså det nu aktuella Swedish Medical Center i Aurora, Colorado. Jag har inte lyckats hitta mer information om dess historia än att det grundades år 1905 som ett sanatorium för tuberkulossjuka. 1956 inriktade man sig på allmän hälso och sjukvård. Sen går vi till Chicago, i Illinois och där hittar vi Swedish Covenant Hospital. Det sjukhuset grundades år 1880 av medlemmarna i den Svenska Evangeliska Missionskyrkan i Chicago. I Seattle, Washington finns Swedish Medical Center, ofta bara känt som "Swedish". Det grundades år 1908 då den svenske emigranten Dr. Nils Johanson, som också var kirurg, övertygade tio andra svenskamerikaner att satsa tusen dollar var och starta ett sjukhus. För mer info se:

I Rockford, Illinois, finner vi Swedish American Health Systems. Det grundades år 1911 då den växande svenska befolkningsgruppen där beslöt att bygga ett sjukhus för att möta det allt större behovet av organiserad sjukvård i staden. För mer info se:

Och så slutligen två som försvunnit under åren genom att de gått upp i andra sjukhus och inrättningar.

Och så slutligen de fem byggnaderna i hörnet av Rogers Avenue och Sterling Place in Brooklyn, New York, som tidigare inhyste Swedish Hospital och nu är ålderdomshem tillhörande Odessa Home for the Aged.

I heard on the TV reports from the terrible massacre in the movie theatre in Aurora, CO, that many of the wounded persons had been taken to the nearby located Swedish Medical Center.

It made me reflect over what hospitals and medical centers founded by the Swedish immigrtants here in the US that still carry their original names.

Thus we have the Swedish Medical Center in Aurora, CO. I have not succeeded in finding more about its history than it was founded in 1905 as a tuberculosis sanatorium. 1956 the focus was turned to general health care. For more info see:

Then we go to Chicago, IL and there we find Swedish Covenant Hospital. That hospital was founded in 1880 by the Swedish Evangelical Covenant Mission Friends. Over the years, many changes have occurred, but the mission remains the same: Swedish Covenant Hospital is committed to caring for the mind, body and spirit of all patients. In Seattle, WA we have Swedish Medical Center, often only known as "Swedish". In 1908, Dr. Nils Johanson, a surgeon and Swedish immigrant, convinced 10 of his fellow Swedish-Americans to put up $1,000 each in order to open Swedish Hospital. For more info see:

For sure there is more proof of the Swedish immigrants initiatives, but this will do for now.
